The Return West

I just finished listening to the new Danger Mouse album, "Rome". It paints a great atmosphere, harkening back to the sound tracks of old spaghetti-westerns. Needless to say, it is a well executed album. But, what interested me more is the vindication this album represents in the return of interest in westerns.

While various new alt-country artists, like the Avett Brothers, Mumford & Sons, Jose Gonzalez/Junip have been blazing a trail up the charts, this album is created by an established Hip-Hop and RnB producer! It shows that intest is broadening beyond the core audience, out into the mainstream.

It seems, to me, that the writing is on the wall for us to see a resurgence of this once prolific genre; not only in music, but also in movies, like True Grit, and video games, like Red Dead Redemption. Time will tell, but I have a feeling if the register bells keep ringing to the sound of the wild west, publishers will be quick to react, and the the next big thing won't be a zombie or a vampire, but a cowboy.

Rob's Fallout: New Vegas Review

I bought Fallout: New Vegas on black Friday last year, knowing that it was plagued by many frustrating (if not nightmarish) technical issues and that a patch was "on the way". To pass the time, I decided to finally go back and finish Fallout 3 while waiting for the fix. It soon came out and by the time I had beaten and explored the Capital Wasteland to my satisfaction, the Mohave was ready and waiting for me to dive right in. Many, many hours later, here is my review of Fallout: New Vegas...

Brad's Favorite Films of 2010

Here are my "best picture" choices for 2010 (in ascending order).

NOTE: I have not seen: The Fighter, The King's Speech, 127 Hours, or Somewhere.

10. Black Swan
Aranofsky explores the world of ballet with the same scrutiny he used in The Wrestler, but adds nightmarish imagery, innuendo, and CG gore. Not everyone will like this surreal film, but it solidifies Portman as one of the best actresses working today.

09. The Last Exorcism
While advertised as another Emily Rose knock off, this is a unique take on the genre through the eyes of a fraudulent pastor who "exorcises" demons for money. The unique premise and found footage style make this one special.

08. Paranormal Activity 2
What could have so easily been a cash grab feels more like essential viewing for fans of the first one. The story is expanded and the scares follow the "less is more" approach. Watch this one with a group.

07. The Social Network
There are tons of films about billion dollar lawsuits, but how many feature kids that are this young and this deep in over their heads?. The unlikely combo of Sorkin, Fincher, Reznor, and Facebook is really something to behold.

06. Toy Story 3
I don't think Pixar ever intended Toy Story to be a trilogy but they pulled it off with style and warmth. The daycare scenes alone warrant a viewing.

05. Date Night
Unsexy married life meets the criminal underworld. While initially light on laughs, it heats up to full boil by the end. Carell and Fey are good, but the multiple cameos really made this for me.

04. Catfish
I made the mistake of thinking Catfish was some kind of horror film. It isn't. It's a fantastic, gripping documentary. There, now go see it.

03. Winters Bone
Just in case you thought that the only movies about poor people were set in Africa, Hollywood has released at least one good "red-neck drama" per year (Frozen River, Shotgun Stories, etc.) This years entry is probably the best. An awesome cast fronted by Jennifer Lawrence, a teenage girl who has to act beyond her years to protect her family.

02. Inception
Big budget rarely meets big concept. It's too risky for the studios. Fortunately, Christopher Nolan has built up enough credit to do whatever he wants and Inception is his most complex film. I could watch an entire movie just about the husband/wife story, but the multi-level heist at the core is one heck of a ride.

01. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Full. Frontal. Nerdity. If there's a movie that activates more of my pleasure centers, I don't know what it is. Yes, the game references are intense (more than I initially realized), but the laughs are huge, the action is top-notch, and the soundtrack is fantastic. I rarely rewatch movies, but the 4th time I shared Scott Pilgrim with friends was just as fun as the first. A mandatory "Best of" for 2010.

...And my least favorite film of 2010 (just in case you wondered):

Alice in Wonderland
The movie that finally put me off Johnny Depp and all his wigs and accents. In my opinion, he needs a break as badly as Tim Burton, whose rape train through all things sacred (Planet of the Apes, Sleepy Hollow, Willy Wonka) continues undeterred. Next Stop, Dark Shadows. All aboard!

Top 5 SuperBowl Commercials

Well, this years Superbowl commercials confirmed the three things that will sell a product: cute animals (Doritos, Bridgestone), sex (GoDaddy, Skechers), and ladies getting hit in the face (Snickers, Pepsi Max). That said, here are our favorite ads:

Pepsi Max: Love Hurts

Brad: Probably the best laugh I had in this somewhat lackluster year for ads. Love the first shot.

Rob: Amidst a sea of hit or miss Pepsi Max ads, this one was truly funny and entertaining. At first it seems like an annoying "women are dumb" ad, but it redeems itself with unexpected violence and a "partners in crime" vibe at the end.

Brad's January Playlist

1. The Creep featuring Nicki Minaj - The Lonely Island
While the video doesn't quite live up to the song, the concept here is solid. I thought I was the only one who said "creeper"!
2. Red Paint - Matt and Kim
Joins last months "Block after Block" for favorites from this album.
3. O.N.E. - Yeasayer
Joins "Ambling Alp" for favorites from this (highly acclaimed) album.
4. The Mission “ M Is for Milla Mix” - Puscifer
Mila Jovovich joins Tool's Maynard Keenan and proves she can carry a tune. Heard in the 2010 documentary, Blood into Wine (worth watching for the Tim and Eric segments alone).
5. Nash - Longmont Potion Castle
As recommended by the Giant Bombcast. Prank calling has come a long way since the Jerky Boys.

Rob's Top Songs of 2010*

Hello. Sorry for taking longer than usual getting this post up but, as we've come to learn doing this blog and our podcast, life happens. Remarkably, I was able to (mostly*) limit this list to tracks released only in 2010, which either means it was that good of a year or that I listened to a lot more music than previous years. Enjoy!

*11. Saving Grace - Crash Kings
My "2009's best of 2010". I love this song, and didn't feel right leaving it out.
10. Forget You - Cee-Lo Green
My latest addition. Cee-Lo had me the moment the tears started flowing.
9. Don't Shoot (I'm A Man) - Devo
The kings of nerd-rock are still in great form. "DON'T TASE ME. BRO!"
8. Make The Bus (Feat. Of Montreal) - Janelle Monae
Probably not too popular with others, but this song always makes me smile.
7. The Cave - Mumford & Sons
Popular with a lot of folks! The Grammys like them, and so do I.
6. Gods and Gentlemen - Drink Up Buttercup
A local favorite of mine. Glad they finally released an LP this year.
5. Brothers - Hot Chip
Always favorites of mine, Hot Chip struck an emotional chord this time.
4. Ambling Alp - Yeasayer
There's something undefinably "classic" about this song. It feels fun and fresh.
3. Walk Tall - Kele
The electronic swoops and dives of this song landed it on my top songs long ago.
2. Dog Days Are Over - Florence and The Machine
I never saw Eat. Pray. Love. but I did fall in love with this song when I first heard it.
1. Giving Up The Gun - Vampire Weekend
This song satisfies like none other. There's nothing I'd change about it. Easy #1.
